Well I decided I needed a thrifily-feasible yet still interesting costume for Halloween, and yeah, there are going to be a million people dressed up as the Joker this year, but I think (or at least I'm hoping) that my dedication to detail (or what I like to call "thrifted screen-accuracy", where I do my best with what I've got) will help me stand out a little. Or something. =P
Lol, sorry if this is kind of informal or lame or whatever, I'm just trying to get all my thoughts in the same place and if it helps someone else, then yay! =D If nothing else, it's at least a good list of source pics...
This is a good basic summary of the Joker's costume. You can see his overcoat (which has a sort of pointed collar) and his undercoat (which is a lighter purple), and that they both have orangey-reddish lining. In that same last pic you can also see that the Joker's overcoat is split partway up the back in three or maybe four parts. (I'm leaning towards three.)
The ovearcoat seems to have four buttons on the right side and one pocket on the left, and it appears as though he wears it with the cuffs unbuttoned. The top right pic is good to see that his hair dye or whatever has kind of grown or washed out.
Good front-facing shot of the Joker's makeup when it's not terribly worn off. It's a good clear shot that the makeup doesn't extend further than his face, too. Also good basic shot of the layering. You can kind of make out the patterns on his shirt and tie. In this scene it's the hexagon-patterned shirt. I think in every pic he has that second-from-the-top-button on his vest unbuttoned, too. You can kind of see the dirt along the edges of the overcoat as well.
Good shot of the shoes from the top as well as the overcoat/pants contrast. You can see the pinstripes a lot more clearly in this one.
You can see in this one that his vest has two pockets with flaps, and this is pretty much one of the best shots of his shoes and socks. It looks like he might be wearing his socks inside-out, from the shadowing it kind of looks like you can see the seams between the colorsquares. (Further down I'll talk about the socks more and try to confirm this, ish)
One of the best shots "confirming" the layering with the suit jacket under the overcoat. According to this, his overcoat cuffs have five buttons and his suit jacket has three buttons on the right side. (Vest buttons on the left, I forgot to mention that.)
GREAT CLOSEUP. You can tell the hair and the worn-off makeup really well, as well as the shirt pattern and the suspenders. The suspenders look like they're either light gray or violet with the green diamond pattern embroidered. You can also sort of tell that the back of his vest is a bluish fabric, and that it might have a diamond-sort of pattern (look to your left side of it) or pinstripish (your right side). It might just be cross-hatched dashed pinstripes that don't show on the right side because of the flash or something. Or it might be the weave of the fabric on the left side making it look like a diamond pattern. You can also see that his eye makeup is either not completely black, or it lightens as it wears off. I'm not sure what kind of makeup does that (I have *very little* makeup experience), but it's definitely not the flaking-off-but-still-solidly-bright face paint I bought, lol.
Good closeup of the Joker's bank-robbing suit. This suit is a different coat and pants (maybe just a dark navyish matching set?) with the striped shirt. I don't know if he had gloves at all in this scene.
This is more of the shirt I'm going to try for (because, let's face it, with the hexagon ones going on ebay for $150, that's a bit ridiculous for what I'm doing), though the shirt I have right now needs to be dyed slightly darker and it doesn't have the diamond pattern. Buuuuut it's the best I could get running to five different thrift stores lol.
Note no tie, but he wears it buttoned up all the way. He doesn't seem to have any hair dye here either.
Another good one for the suspenders, tie, and shirt patters.

You can see the collar of the vest sort of, here. I'm not really sure what's going on but you can see that there's green that comes around the back on the blue. (Woo, yeah, I know technical clothing terms, haha.)
Also, check out those creepy fingernails. (The paint on the fingers is a detail I noticed; it kind of makes me laugh.)
You can see in this one he has really thin shoelaces (and that the toes curl up; I think that makes them feel more like clown shoes), and that his tie comes below his vest by a little bit.
I think this is the best shot I've seen of that pocket chain; I'm trying to figure out what it's attached to. (My best guess is another grenade.) Anyone know?
You can kind of see the inside of his glove in this one; I think there is some sort of buckle there, at least in comparison to the costume gloves they're selling.

I don't know much about makeup (so any recommendations?) but I'm going to mention that going the Elmer's Glue cheapo route is not very effective if you want to move your mouth at all during the day. I wore it for half a day (didn't let it dry very well, either, and ended up just sort of dabbing it on with my finger in front of a fan to get it to dry in a rough state) and after just a few hours it was starting to peel at the crooks of my mouth. So, I really want to try some sort of scar latex or something for Halloween, I dunno. Whatever I can find that's not Elmer's, lol.

Here is the link to the company that made the socks for the movie. Going by that site they are making some and plan to have them sent out in time for Halloween? But they aren't cheap, that's for sure. BUT, you can definitely tell that inside-out-seams detail (or whatever you call it? just seams maybe) is there.

In terms of the suspenders, I found white suspenders randomly at Hot Topic (quite serendipitous as I was there for a Batman shirt). I'm going to see if I can maybe dye them gray and paint the diamond pattern on. (Maybe it's appropriate this costume is going to drive me insane; I decided to paint on tons of tiny little diamonds and then white pinstripes on the pants...) Unless I randomly find a ribbon with a matching/close-enough pattern, then I will just glue or sew that on.
And thanks to the lovelyedgein_copycat, we have lots of Joker cards!
