The original Nick Fury is white, and dates back to, like, WWII or something. The Ultimate Nick Fury (from Marvel's Ultimate Universe, basically all their characters re-imagined with a bunch of little differences) is indeed based on SLJ, with his permission, and the film version played by him is based on the Ultimate version. The eyepatch is a constant.
SLJ as Nick Fury has a bigger role in the Incredible Hulk movie later this summer, and Iron Man will cameo.
