Well I decided I needed a thrifily-feasible yet still interesting costume for Halloween, and yeah, there are going to be a million people dressed up as the Joker this year, but I think (or at least I'm hoping) that my dedication to detail (or what I like to call "thrifted screen-accuracy", where I do my best with what I've got) will help me stand out a little. Or something. =P

Lol, sorry if this is kind of informal or lame or whatever, I'm just trying to get all my thoughts in the same place and if it helps someone else, then yay! =D If nothing else, it's at least a good list of source pics...

dknewpics

This is a good basic summary of the Joker's costume. You can see his overcoat (which has a sort of pointed collar) and his undercoat (which is a lighter purple), and that they both have orangey-reddish lining. In that same last pic you can also see that the Joker's overcoat is split partway up the back in three or maybe four parts. (I'm leaning towards three.)

The ovearcoat seems to have four buttons on the right side and one pocket on the left, and it appears as though he wears it with the cuffs unbuttoned. The top right pic is good to see that his hair dye or whatever has kind of grown or washed out.

1z6gyg2as6

Good front-facing shot of the Joker's makeup when it's not terribly worn off. It's a good clear shot that the makeup doesn't extend further than his face, too. Also good basic shot of the layering. You can kind of make out the patterns on his shirt and tie. In this scene it's the hexagon-patterned shirt. I think in every pic he has that second-from-the-top-button on his vest unbuttoned, too. You can kind of see the dirt along the edges of the overcoat as well.

2llbtefmc9

Good shot of the shoes from the top as well as the overcoat/pants contrast. You can see the pinstripes a lot more clearly in this one.

hs5gcj

You can see in this one that his vest has two pockets with flaps, and this is pretty much one of the best shots of his shoes and socks. It looks like he might be wearing his socks inside-out, from the shadowing it kind of looks like you can see the seams between the colorsquares. (Further down I'll talk about the socks more and try to confirm this, ish)

14DK_TheJoker_12inches

One of the best shots "confirming" the layering with the suit jacket under the overcoat. According to this, his overcoat cuffs have five buttons and his suit jacket has three buttons on the right side. (Vest buttons on the left, I forgot to mention that.)

1zb7whu

GREAT CLOSEUP. You can tell the hair and the worn-off makeup really well, as well as the shirt pattern and the suspenders. The suspenders look like they're either light gray or violet with the green diamond pattern embroidered. You can also sort of tell that the back of his vest is a bluish fabric, and that it might have a diamond-sort of pattern (look to your left side of it) or pinstripish (your right side). It might just be cross-hatched dashed pinstripes that don't show on the right side because of the flash or something. Or it might be the weave of the fabric on the left side making it look like a diamond pattern. You can also see that his eye makeup is either not completely black, or it lightens as it wears off. I'm not sure what kind of makeup does that (I have *very little* makeup experience), but it's definitely not the flaking-off-but-still-solidly-bright face paint I bought, lol.

dk0015vb7

Good closeup of the Joker's bank-robbing suit. This suit is a different coat and pants (maybe just a dark navyish matching set?) with the striped shirt. I don't know if he had gloves at all in this scene.

This is more of the shirt I'm going to try for (because, let's face it, with the hexagon ones going on ebay for $150, that's a bit ridiculous for what I'm doing), though the shirt I have right now needs to be dyed slightly darker and it doesn't have the diamond pattern. Buuuuut it's the best I could get running to five different thrift stores lol.

Note no tie, but he wears it buttoned up all the way. He doesn't seem to have any hair dye here either.

joker1

Another good one for the suspenders, tie, and shirt patters.

dark-knight-7

You can see the socks again in that one, but not very well.

2whqlnb

You can see the collar of the vest sort of, here. I'm not really sure what's going on but you can see that there's green that comes around the back on the blue. (Woo, yeah, I know technical clothing terms, haha.)

Also, check out those creepy fingernails. (The paint on the fingers is a detail I noticed; it kind of makes me laugh.)

dk16596wq8

You can see in this one he has really thin shoelaces (and that the toes curl up; I think that makes them feel more like clown shoes), and that his tie comes below his vest by a little bit.

I think this is the best shot I've seen of that pocket chain; I'm trying to figure out what it's attached to. (My best guess is another grenade.) Anyone know?

34djuys

You can kind of see the inside of his glove in this one; I think there is some sort of buckle there, at least in comparison to the costume gloves they're selling.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29817944@N04/2855241360/sizes/l/

Kind of a dark shot, but you can still kind of tell there might be that buckle/strap on the undersides of the gloves. Also, the pocket on the side of the overcoat.

dk0047tg2

Definitely five buttons on the overcoat cuffs, and definitely buckles and straps on the gloves. Also fairly thick seams on the gloves. Pretty good shot of the right side of his scars (you can tell it really curves up on this side), and with that, here are the best scar shots I've been able to find:

So yay details if you're trying to do the scars well. I don't know much about makeup (so any recommendations?) but I'm going to mention that going the Elmer's Glue cheapo route is not very effective if you want to move your mouth at all during the day. I wore it for half a day (didn't let it dry very well, either, and ended up just sort of dabbing it on with my finger in front of a fan to get it to dry in a rough state) and after just a few hours it was starting to peel at the crooks of my mouth. So, I really want to try some sort of scar latex or something for Halloween, I dunno. Whatever I can find that's not Elmer's, lol.

Let's see. That's the end of the pictures, but here are some potentially useful sites/tips/whatevskis. Mostly just found it all by googling and clicking through lots of links.

The knife:

The socks:

Here is the link to the company that made the socks for the movie. Going by that site they are making some and plan to have them sent out in time for Halloween? But they aren't cheap, that's for sure. BUT, you can definitely tell that inside-out-seams detail (or whatever you call it? just seams maybe) is there.

You can find a guy on ebay selling these (the top image): http://www.yourprops.com/view_item.php?movie_prop=19715

A potential "do it yourself" method: http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=14548035&postcount=43

Or some for those close-enough-types: http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/latest_product_detail_ProductID_1280.php

...I love fun socks. :D

In terms of the suspenders, I found white suspenders randomly at Hot Topic (quite serendipitous as I was there for a Batman shirt). I'm going to see if I can maybe dye them gray and paint the diamond pattern on. (Maybe it's appropriate this costume is going to drive me insane; I decided to paint on tons of tiny little diamonds and then white pinstripes on the pants...) Unless I randomly find a ribbon with a matching/close-enough pattern, then I will just glue or sew that on.

And thanks to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] edgein_copycat, we have lots of Joker cards!

Fronts: http://edgein-copycat.livejournal.com/1552.html?view=18192
Backs: http://edgein-copycat.livejournal.com/1869.html

I also have a purple Joker card from a Bicycle deck, which I will post here as soon as I get it scanned. (My scanner died. *sadface*) And maybe post pictures of my Elmer's glue and Walmart-facepaint Joker makeup if anyone thinks that would be at all helpful. =/ If you have other Joker cards randomly scanned or something, I would love to link them and get a whole bunch together!

Anyway... Hope that all helps someone! And if anyone has recommendations for stuffing the toes of shoes so they fit, that would be great too. :D

[EDIT] There's some more great info in the comments, so I definitely recommend reading it! So far a good source for the hexagon fabric, the original source for the tie, other pics, and lost of other stuff. Thanks for posting it all, guys! :D

P.S. Don't forget your vegetable peeler! :P

Here are a few more things you might find interesting:

The dark knight joker shirt is an interesting piece of fabric. Over on http://www.thedentedhelmet.com a group was forming to get this fabric custom printed.
After hours and hours of work on the part of those involved the thread for ordering this is up and running. Below is a link to a watermaked photo of the vector for the printer. The pattern is 99.999 percent accurate down to counting the number of patterns in the individual hexagons. So the number of rows are correct. The pattern layout is 100% accurate as well.

Those interested in obtaining this custom printed fabric should check out this thread. These will be available before halloween and is not for profit. Simply a labor of love.

Wow, thanks! I wasn't having as much luck with either of those. :D

Oh wow! *mems*

Btw, the company that makes his tie is called "Turnbull & Asser". They are going to sell a few more for about $150! :D

About the chain...some people in the SHH boards said it may be attached to a knife, since he had "nothing in his pockets but knives and lint".

For the scars, try Rigid Collodian, although it's not going to give you the "raised" look the scar on the right has.

And you're welcome! :D

Awesome! Geez, if you really went all-out for this costume it would be soooo expensive! =P I'm considering buying the socks because I am a sock person, but I definitely can't afford $26-a-yard fabric and a $150 tie, lol.

Good thought on the knife, I hadn't thought of that! Definitely going to get a chain and attach it to my swiss army knife, since it has a keychain bit. ;)

Someone else had mentioned Rigid Collodian for the "pulling" effect, so I'll have to see if I can use part that and part something else.

Thanks again!

This is a great post! Makes me wish I was doing Joker for Halloween with all of the excellent source material.

The scars to me look like a combo of VERY well-blended putty (if you look closely on the naked skin pics, you can see the edges) for the puffy bits and latex for the depressed, shiny scar material. You're right, traditional costuming greasepaint makeup is not going to flake and chip; my best guess for how to get the flaky-chipped look (if that's what you want) is a wash of thinned acrylic paint across your face .PLEASE be careful of your eyes; I wouldn't use black acrylic there, just smudge on kohl and the bits that overlap the white acrylic will flake quite naturally! White acrylics should be non-toxic (it's the cadmiums and cobalts that you should avoid in terms of skin contact), but please double check--also, do a test on your hand to make sure you're not allergic to any of the ingredients. Acrylic paint is water-based, so it will wash off very easily.

Thanks! I actually have some latex-based facepaint which is what I used before that was chipping around my mouth. So I think I might try some sort of greasepaint or something just on the mouth area, and the chippier stuff for the rest of the face. I'll try to post some pics for reference this evening. =)

Thanks for the tips on the scar makeup though! :D

The scars used in the film were made from prosthetic grade silicon, most likely Platsil Gel 10. http://www.siliconprosthetics.com/

Most likely the white makeup was Skin Illustrator, an alcohol thinned pro-grade makeup that tends to give that flaked look when rubbed at a lot though it itself does not flake (it's actually one of the best products to keep from smearing on your clothing). http://www.skinillustrator.com/

Given that the folks at Silicon Prosthetics.com are the ones who actually made the scars for the film and did all the makeup for the film and they say they paint their appliances with Skin Illustrator, I'd wager on that being the material used for the white.

As for the red makeup, anyone's guess there. Could have been a theatrical cream makeup like Ben Nye, more Skin Illustrator or simply a lipstick.

The black however, I'd be wiling to bet was something else, quite possibly mascara or something equally water soluble. From interviews I've read with the makeup artist who did the day to day application, I'd think they would apply the black filling in a few of the crease lines left by the white, hit the black with a spray bottle of water to get it to run a bit, then seal the whole mess with a makeup sealer to keep the stuff from wearing away over the eyelids.

M.
