So last night my family went out to see Wicked. I'm glad Grandma got a distraction from worrying about Grandpa, and I'm glad Laura got to go because she seemed to like it; but I'm really sad Grandpa didn't get to go, I know he would have loved it.
Anyway, despite the fact that this is the third time I've seen the musical (and I've read the book twice, though not recently, and Son of a Witch only once), this is the first time I realized something odd about it. They wrap things up so nicely at the end to follow the book (and, to an extent, the MGM film as well), you know, with Dorothy, the tin man, the scarecrow, and the lion, and Glinda and all that jazz; but I never realized that the ending to the musical doesn't quite work out as well as you first thing it does. Yeah, you come off thinking Elphie is happy since she has Fiyero, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT? The Scarecrow goes on to be the King of the Emerald City after the Wizard leaves and before they find Ozma. If I remember properly, this does actually happen in the book, because Elphaba never finds Fiyero, and her son goes on to work for the guard and gets to talk to the Scarecrow or some such. Anyway, it just struck me as odd considering how nicely everything else is wrapped up in the storyline, but, eh, it's a musical, what are you gonna go?
