Sci Fi (Star Trek) and fashion. First of all, this article led me to discover that my mom watched Star Trek growing up and never told me. I never would have suspected! She keeps to quiet on some things, and then just BAM out of left field come these things that I would have just liked to have known earlier in life. Like, haha, the first (and only?) time she got drunk in college, and the band teacher had to drive her home. Oh, mom.

Anyway, my point on this article is thus: One; I can see where the directors are coming from. Trust me, sci-fi and "nerd" movies would not be as popular as they are if they had not been serioused-up a bit, in my opinion. I mean, they'd do fine, I just don't think they'd be quite so successful, get what I'm saying? Look at Fantastic 4, for example. Not... great. Decent, but not great. Dark Knight on the other hand? Fucking blew me away.

Now, if you're looking for fashion in sci-fi, as one commenter pointed out, there is Firefly. Which is like sci-fi meets steampunk, sort-of-kind-of-ish-not-really. There's also this thing called cyberpunk, you may have heard of it. It still exists in things like the Queen musical and that sort of jazz. (Or not jazz, as it so may be.)

A letter from a slave to his owner. It is awesome and full of pwnination. And what do you know, the guy lived in Dayton and is buried in Woodland Cemetery. Next time I'm over there I'll have to go hunt him down and give him a high five or something. =)

Seriously... I am a huge dork. I've been geeking out in concrete lab because it's... concrete. Lol. It doesn't help that this amazing house went up for sale on ebay and I really want to own it. Seriously, just look at the pictures. I would totally turn it into my Dr. Evil/Tony Stark lair. DORK

Yeeaaaaaaaah. Concrete is awesome.

So this is cool, you can vote to name node 3 of the ISS, and you should totally vote for Serenity. It's winning by a landslide and I'm really not surprised. (Although I'm actually surprised some other huge space fandom hasn't picked up on it and tried to name it something else, although I could be wrong since they don't show the votes for the top suggestions.)

Okay so I didn't realize the Harry Potter themepark was not going to be a separate park. That's more understandable. Although the other article mentioned the other "island' themes, and they sounded a little more interesting. I think my grandma wants to take us down there, though, so maybe I can get a Disney+Universal trip out of her.

OMG CHECK THIS OUT I doubt it's actually Atlantis but it looks like it could be something. So cool.

Shia saves a snake. Appropriate, I daresay.

Things I learned from the Oscars this year: DUDE NO ONE TOLD ME ROY SCHNEIDER DIED. Jaws was so good! (And fie on those who have never seen it.) By the way, did anyone watch the Oscars? Damn they were good this year. Jackman is a great host, Tina Fey and Steve Martin were hilarious, I liked all the stage settings for the first half, and Ben Stiller as Joaquin Phoenix was ridiculous. ("You look like you work at a Hasidic meth lab.") So good, so good. Second half, kinda blah, though. Too much Slumdog stuff... Meh. The speech from the writer of Milk was AMAZING though, HOLY CRAP. Oh and Ledger, won, yay! :D

Oh, here's something else the screenwriter for Milk wrote about it. His message is so good... and so true.

Yep yep, so. Back later with more, I'm sure.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I have a lot of stuff to catch up on, I know.

Did you know Socks died? That's so sad. :C In first grade I had Socks' autograph, until it disappeared from the cabinet. I think my mom threw it out on accident.

Check out this adorable video about a lion... So cute.

Stephen Fry is going to be the Cheshire Cat! Well, voice him. Either way it's going to be ~awesome~. Stephen Fry is just amazing, period. This is going to be a super wicked Alice in Wonderland.

How about the big fight scene from Serenity, the rehearsal choreography? It's bad-ass.

Tower of Terror movie? Hell yes.

Bill Nighy wants to be in the next Pirates. Another resounding hell yes.

NPH as The Flash? I can't see it, but I have no doubt it would be amazing. (The Flash was always my favorite--I was never into comics but for some unknown-to-even-god-reason, I had a four-inch-or-so Flash action figure when I was little. I wonder what happened to it...)

A picture of the end of a rainbow. So cool.

Dude, check this out: a squid that has a symbiotic relationship with a bioluminscent material (bacteria?) that causes them to look holographic. How sweet is that?!

Okay that's all for now. I have another post full of links waiting in my email inbox, buuuut I'm going to be a jerk and not post them right now. LJ's janky tag box is bothering me. (Plus I'm busy adding a bunch of links to my wiki. I have fallen in love with it.)

Went over to my friend Mike's house tonight and played Guitar Hero III (after being practically attacked by his dog Gracie for an hour). We beat it on medium in two hours though my wrists are killing me. And in all honesty the music for this one sucks... =/ Guitar Hero two is MUCH more awesome. Sadly, didn't get to watch any Firefly, but that's okay. Also, I know where his freaking house is if I ever need to get there (definitely got lost in Huber Heights this evening), as well as NEW CARLISLE. Damn.

Other than that not much happened today... finally slept well, went shopping with mom and Laura and was oddly successful in finding dress clothes. Two pairs of (different) black pants that fit pretty damn well and were super-comfy, and a cream blouse and a gray vest, and a purplish shiny victorianish shirt that Laura and I are going to share. All from Forever 21; I love their clothes but it really makes me sad that they're being sued by at least one independent artist over design infringement, soooo... it makes me kind of sad inside that I spent so much of my clothes budget there. =/ And then mom bought these brown low-heeled dress shoes that look like they have some brown carpet-bag spat sort of thing, closed with a homemade safety pin. They are GORGEOUS. A little big for her and a little tight for me, but hooray! So with today's minimal shopping I have greatly increased the steampunk-osity of my wardrobe. I also found some GREAT black pirate boots on sale the other day, as well as some plainish chucks I can paint. They are a military-ish shade of green, no laces; any idea what I could paint on them? Color/pattern-wise?

Aaaaaaaaaaaand:

On the fourth day of Christmas, my LJ gave to me--Chicago and some children,

Straight No Chaser singing,
God Rest Ye lights a-blinking,
and a "happy holidays" so merry.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays! I think I might just keep looking for my favorite Christmas songs on youtube. =) This one's more interesting than the God Rest Ye one I posted the other day, except that it seems sort of random. But, eh... that's just the musician in me talking, I think.
